Diamond Discs

Diamond cutting discs

Diamonds are the hardest natural material on earth that is known to man. The majority of diamonds are mined for industrial purposes and many diamonds are used to make numerous cutting tools because of their strength. Diamonds do not wear away as rapidly as other materials used for abrasive discs, making diamond discs last much longer than other cutting or grinding discs.

One does not need to use a large amount of force when using diamond discs in comparison to using discs made from other abrasive materials. Diamond discs are therefore the preferred choice for cutting and grinding hard materials.

Metal bonded diamond discs are made using tiny pieces of diamonds that are mixed with metal powders and pressed together. This mixture is then bonded into a round disc shape. When a diamond disc is used, small pieces of the diamonds bonded to the abrasive in the disc are used to cut away the material being worked on. As the small pieces of diamonds in the diamond disc are worn away, other pieces of diamonds are exposed and used to cut away the chosen material.

Diamonds discs may be used either wet or dry when cutting materials and different types of diamond discs are made which vary in thickness and grit. One must always be certain that one uses the correct diamond discs and tools when wet cutting and one must also exercise extreme caution when working with electricity and water.

Wet cutting with diamond discs are mostly used for cutting hard thick material such as concrete, and the water is used to cool the diamond disc and to assist one to cut deeper into the material. The correct protective clothing should always be worn to prevent serious injury when using diamond discs. This includes a face cover and breathing mask to protect ones lungs from the tiny particles of diamonds and other materials that are worn from the diamond disc.
